National short track championships open

Chinas short track speed skaters took to the rink in the northeast city of Changchun as the National Short Track Championships got under way.

Competitors from across the nation attended the four-day event, which will decide who qualifies for next years National Winter Games. Since those games are based on team events, only the top 8 provinces from this tournament will advance automatically.

On Thursday, the local team led by national star Liang Wenhao, produced a solid performance. They won the mens team competition to earn 50 points. In the womens team event, skaters from Harbin, many of them also national team members, were the winners on day 1, finishing with 47 points.

Wang Fei resets 1500m speed skating Asian record

Watch Video Play Video A long-awaited moment for China at the Asian Winter Games. It happened during a gold medal run in the women's 1500 meters speed skating event. Chinese skater Wang Fei raced her way into the record books. She set a new Asian mark for the 1500 metres, crossing the line at 1 minute 58.37 seconds. It was 1-and-a-half seconds under the previous record time she set four years ago. South Korean Noh Seonyeong took second place. The bronze went to Japanese skater Kodaira Nao.
