La Galaxy beat Houston Dynamo 1-0

A global soccer icon celebrated another championship on Sunday. Englishman David Beckham made good on a promise to help bring a Major League Soccer title to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Galaxy played the Houston Dynamo for the MLS crown, and import duo Beckham and Robbie Keane gave the captain Landon Donovan the honor of scoring the only goal of the match, in the 72nd minute. The Galaxy claimed its first championship since 2005, and third in the past decade, and the victory successfully validated the franchise's lucrative investment. Beckham arrived in 2007, followed by Irish striker Keane. The pair connected with Donovan to give the side three designated players, paid above salary cap restrictions. Anything less than a league title would have meant failure in L-A.

Beckham said: "At Manchester United, I was lucky I won a trophy almost every year of my contract. At Real Madrid, it was just coincidence that we won my last year there. And, I've now won a trophy here in my fifth year. ! I said b efore, I need to sit back and relax and enjoy this moment and then decide what I'm going to do. But I might talk in past tense every now and again but it doesn't mean I'm not coming back. At the end of the day, I need to decide what's best for me and what's best for the team and what's best for my family and then we'll see."

And the striker of La Galaxy, Robbie Keane said: "I don't compare. I never look to the past as a player. Just look to the future. This has obviously been a great week for me personally with the national team and then four days later come back and win the championship. It's been a good week. It's been tough; a lot of travel, but it's worthwhile when you win."

Chinese skater Wang Fei raced her way into the record books. She set a new Asian mark for the 1500 metres, crossing the line at 1 minute 58.37 seconds. It was 1-and-a-half seconds under the previous record time she set four years ago. South Korean Noh Seonyeong took second place. The bronze went to Japanese skater Kodaira Nao.
