Two of English soccer's top clubs met in a League Cup clash on Tuesday. Arsenal hosted Manchester City at The Emirates in a quarter-final round match.
The two teams lined up in the center circle before the match, to pay tribute to Gary Speed, the former Welsh coach that took his own life on Sunday. Speed made more than 700 appearances for Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United in a career that spanned 22 seasons.
Over to the game action, 11th minute, the Gunners Francis Coquelin crossed the ball into the penalty area. Chu-Young Park took the shot, but Citys keeper made a top-draw reflex save to deny him at the far post. 0-0.(REPLAY) Costel Pantilimon made the play for City.
Then in the 27th minute, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain took a 30-meter shot...and Pantilimon made another spectacular stop. Oxlade-Chamberlain could not believe that he did not score. The teams were 0-0 at the break.
Second half...83rd minute, Citys Adam Johnson. Johnson linked up with Sergio Aguero, and the Argentine playmaker hit the mark. Man City took the lead 1-0.
Arsenals Chamakh had a great chance to equalise in stoppage time, but the Moroccan failed to get his head on Gervinhos cross. Man City won the game 1-0. City joins Liverpool and Cardiff City in the semi-finals. Liverpool topped Chesea, and Cardiff beat Blackburn Rovers.
