It is Australia's most prestigious horse race and is dubbed as the race
that stops a nation. And this year the richest handicap in the world went
down to the wire.
Early on, Illo and Precedance were the early pace-setters, but for a race that is 2 miles long stamina plays an important part in victory.
And in the final couple of hundred metres the horses were closely packed with Dunaden and Red Cadeaux both making a move on the outside even on the replay it is too close to call.
This one went to a photo finish and that is as close to a dead heat you will ever see. Dunaden winning by the narrowest of margins. The win by the French trained horse means it was only the fifth time in the 151-year history of the race, the trophy has been carried off by a non-Australian or New Zealand trainer.
Dunaden's Jockey---Christophe Lemaire said:" Thank you very much. This day will be one of the great moments of my career, and I wil! l never forget. I hope to come for the Melbourne Cup year after year. And my thinking goes also to Craig Williams. I know it's very hard for him, but it's part of our jockey's life, and I'm sure he'll win the Melbourne Cup one day. So, thank you very much for being here, and I hope to see you next year."
