Hiddink steps down as Turkish coach

Guus Hiddinks contract as coach of the Turkish national football team has been terminated by mutual consent following the squads failure to reach the Euro 2012 finals. The Turkish Football Federation made the announcement Wednesday, ending a disappointing spell in charge for the Dutchman.

The decision had been widely expected after Turkeys scoreless draw in Croatia on Tuesday which completed the teams defeat in their playoff. Even before the playoffs, the 65-year-old coach had been under fire for failing to inspire the club.

Boasting a rich reserve of talented players, Turkey reached the semi-finals of Euro 2008. On the streets of Istanbul, Hiddink had few friends.

Omer Faruk Elci, an Istanbul resident, said, "Of course he is a technical director and his career is full of victories. However as a Turkish citizen, I have been saying that he has nothing to give to the Turkish National team, because he is complacent after his previous success."

Hiddink has been a legendary coach, achieving success in several countries and clubs. His career reached its zenith in 2002 when he led obscure South Korea to the World Cup semifinals. But the Dutchmens aura fade! d in the next few years after mediocre results as coach of Australia and Russia.

Turkish media reports say the coach of Turkish first division club Buyuksehir Belediyesi Spor, Abdullah Avci, will be announced as Hiddinks replacement.
