Villareal remain 3rd with win over Sevilla

A pretty important matchup for both Villareal and Sevilla on Sunday. While neither has a realistic chance to overtake Barcelona or Real Madrid and take the league title...both, playing for one of the top four spots and a place in next season's champions league.

Villareal got off to a good start to this one, and almost went ahead in the 27th minute.

Sevilla keeper Andres Palop did well to keep out Santi Cazorla's shot and then catch Giuseppe Rossi's follow-up header.

3 minutes later, Villareal converted their pressure into a goal in the 30th minute... Rossi with an excellent pass for strike partner Nilmar who rounded Palop before side-footing home for 1-0.

Palop got a touch to the ball, but he could not stop the Brazilian scoring his ninth league goal of the season.

Sevilla thought they had equalised early in the second half when Luca Cigarini beat the offside trap to collect Jose Carlos' free-kick and gave Frederic Kanoute the simplest of tap-ins.

However, Kanoute was called offside. The replay showed both decisions were marginal.

Pedro Rios scored twice to lead Getafe to a 3-0 win over Mallorca, and Malaga downed Racing Santander 4-1 after a brace by Jose Rondon. Also, 10-man Espanyol beat Sporting Gijon 1-0 to move into third place. In Sunday's other late game, Real Sociedad hosts Athletic Bilbao in the Basque derby.

As we turn to the standings, Barcelona remain on top after week 14...leading Real Madrid by two points. With the win, Villarreal remains solidly in third place, five points behind second-place Real Madrid.

With their loss, Sevilla has now lost four straight in all competitions and they fall to 10th place...eight points back of Espanyol who are holding onto the final Champions League spot.
