Copa Sudamericana: Independiente beat Goias 5-3

Independiente has hosted Goias in the second leg of the final of the Copa Sudamericana. they had to overturn a 2-0 deficit from last week's first leg.


Independiente opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Harlei did well to keep out Carlos Matheu's fierce shot, but he had no chance with the rebound from Julian Velazquez.


Three minutes later, Goias stunned the home crowd when Carlos Alberto crossed for Rafael Moura to head the equalizer on the night.


Then some lady luck in the 27th minute, Hernando's clearance hit Facundo Parra and loop into the net. The ball actually cannoned off Parra's standing leg but, they all count.


with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Parra scored again to level the tie on aggregate - the striker improvising superbly to volley home while sat on the turf after battling for the initial cross. With away goals not counting for extra, both teams were keen to go for the win.


The second half and extra time failed to yield a goal so it went to a penalty shoot-out with Independiente winning the toss and electing to go first. After five successful spot-kicks, Goias forward Felipe struck his effort against the post to the delight of the home faithful. Matheu put Independiente 4-2 up but Moura replied so Eduardo Tuzzio had the chance to win it for the Argentine giants. The defender scored to end the most dramatic of cup finals and secure the Copa Sudamericana for Independiente.
