The whipping top sport is divided into one offensive side and one defensive side. During the competition, the offensive side gain grades and the defensive side receives none. When the offensive side successfully hits the other side's whipping top,and knocks it out of the field or stops it spinning, it'll take 4 grades.
When the offensive side hit the whipping top of its competitor and spins longer, it gains 3 grades; if the whipping top of both sides stops at the same time, the offensive side gains 2 grades; if the offensive side's whipping top hit its competitor but stops first, it gains one grade. When it doesn't hit the defensive side's whipping top, it'll get zero.
Ma Pengfei, coach of Shandong Province Team, said, "This game was invented by an ethnic minority in Yunnan province. Before, it used a whip to compete to
keep the whipping top spinning longer. But people found that the whipping top spun too long and made the competition difficult to continue. If no mistakes were made, the whipping top could even spin a whole day. So people changed the rules and the attack became the crucial part of the game. "
Wang Chao, Etnia Tu, said, "This sport is really entertaining. We call it "Chinese Golf". If you can hit your competitor's whipping top, you will have fun here. If you compete with those at the same level, you'll become addicted to this game. I'm nearly 40 now,and I love this game. People of any age can all participate in this sport, even those in their 60's"
Xie Youming, Etnia Yao, said, "When I was young, I lived in a remote mountain area and we didn't have much choice of entertainment. We carved wood to make this little thing and I am really happy to have the chance to show people our skills."
Xie Youming ! is now c alled the King of whipping top in Guizhou province. He told us he learned how to play the game in Yunnan Province.
Before, the standard of Guizhou province was not good but in 2006, Xie Youming and his team members were invited to Yunan for a tournament where they imitated the method of the players of an ethnic minority in Yunnan and learned by themselves.
This year, they are the champion of this game in the 9th Gui Zhou National Minority Games.
