England's Dougherty shines on day 1 of European Masters

Round one of the European Masters in Switzerland provides further proof that golf, truly is a ridiculous game. England's Nick Dougherty came into the event, on a horrid run as he has missed 21 cuts in a row. But after round one, it is Dougherty who sits with the lead as he went out and dropped a 63 on the rest of the field on Thursday.
Open champion Darren Clarke got his tournament off to a solid start. The Northern Irishman shot a four-under-par round of 67 on Thursday, helped by this eagle at the 14th.
World number two Lee Westwood is also four-under. The Englishman made birdies at the 14th and then here at the 15th to get to six-under at one point but slipped back with bogeys on 17 and 18.
US Open champion Rory McIlroy is at six- under after round one, McIlroy making seven birdies on the day including this one at the third. This is the Northern Irishman's first tournament since injuring his arm at the US PGA Championship.

Germany's Martin Kaymer is another on six-under, helped by this long birdie at the 8th. Last year's US PGA champion has slipped to fifth in the world rankings with his last European Tour triumph coming in Abu Dhabi in January.
England's Nick Dougherty knows a thing or two about slumps. He! now sit s 791st in the world rankings after a run of 21 consecutive missed cuts since last November's Hong Kong Open. However, he threw the form book out the window on Thursday with a bogey-free opening round of 63.
Dougherty will head into round two with a two stroke lead on field after a fantastic opening round that left him at lead eight-under.
