Santos beat America 1-0 in Copa Libertadores

The Copa Libertadores, South America's most prestigious club tournament has entered the round of 16. Wednesday night saw Brazilian giants Santos hosting Mexico's Club America in the first leg of their tie.

First half: The Mexican side managed a shot on target near the half-hour mark. Andres Olivera let fly following a long boot upfield but Santos 'keeper Rafael pushed the ball away for a corner.

The Brazilian hosts would score seven minutes before half-time. Neymar carried the ball forward before picking out Paulo Henrique Ganso for a sweet left-foot finish.

Second half: This speculative strike almost brought Club America level in the second half - Rafael was, though, able to breathe a sigh of relief after the ball struck the frame of the goal.

Neither side was able to score in the second period, but Club America manager Carlos Reinoso did see one of his players sent off in injury time. Miguel Layun saw red after this foul on Leo earned the substitute his second booking. Brazilian giants Santos beat Mexico's Club America 1-0 at home.

Estudiantes, Cerro Porteno draw 0-0

Elsewhere, four-time Copa Libertadores champions Estudiantes were at home against Cerro Porteno for the first leg.

First half: Following a corner, Pedro Benitez was a whisker away from giving Cerro Porteno an early lead as his header brushed the crossbar.

Five minutes later it was Estudiantes' turn to go close. Again the chance followed a corner - Hernan Lopez pulled off an overhead kick but goalkeeper Diego Barreto palmed the ball to safety.

Second half: Barreto could be equally satis! fied wit h his second-half performance. Gaston Fernandez tried his luck from just outside the penalty area, only for Barreto to pluck the ball out of the sky.

Then Fernandez held his head in his hands after being denied at close range by the 'keeper's outstretched leg.

Cerro Porteno managed a nil-nil draw, but not before suffering a sending off. Their midfielder, Rodrigo Burgos came through the back of Fernandez to earn a second booking and a subsequent red card four minutes from full-time. The second leg will take place in Asuncion on May the 5th.
