Lakers top Hornets 98-80, win series 4-2

We begin with the NBA playoffs and a chance for the L-A Lakers to advance to the second round. The Lakers took a 3-2 series lead into New Orleans. Could the Hornets deliver another sensational game against the defending NBA champs?
There were no worries about Kobe Bryant's ability in game 6. He hit a trademark turnaround jumper to put LA on top.
Jarrett Jack danced his way in for a floater. New Orleans played close as the game went into the second quarter.
Pau Gasol tallied 16 for the Lakers. The Spaniard drained a jumper that gave L-A an 8 point lead midway through the third.
But Kobe played the starring role. He scored 24 on the night. Bryant's triple stretched the Lakers cushion to double digits.
And Lamar Odom's trip to the rim put the Lakers up by 20. The Hornets suffered a disastrous second half against Los Angeles.
The champions coasted to a 98-80 win. The Lakers advance to the Western Conference semis. L-A coach Phil Jackson is one series win away from another NBA finals appearance.
Mavs roll past Trailblazers 103-96, win series 4-2
Dallas went to Portland for their first round game 6.
Jason Kidd beat the shot clock from three point range. Dallas had a solid lead with 4 minutes to go in the third.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 33 points and grabbed 11 boards. The German helped the Mavs maintain a steady lead.
But LaMarcus Aldridge had a great game for Portland. He hit for 24 points...and drilled a triple that trimmed the margin to 6 midway through the fourth quarter.
Gerald Wallace dunked on the run moments later, and the TrailBlazers were th! reatenin g to catch the Mavs. Wallace had 32, but Dallas stopped the Portland momentum.
Jason Terry hit a two and the Mavs pulled away. Dallas gets the 103-96 victory,and wraps up a 4-2 series win.
Hawks dampen Magic 84-81, win series 4-2
The Hawks had the chance to close out the Magic in game 6.
Josh Smith spun in for a slam. Atlanta had a narrow early lead.
Teammate Joe Johnson laid one in and the Hawks extended their cushion to 9, deep in the third quarter.
Orlando's Dwight Howard came back with a power jam. He kept the Magic close midway through the final quarter, and Orlando got even closer.
Jameer Nelson's driving layup made it a one point game with less than 40 seconds to go. Atlanta would come back to post a 3 point lead and Orlando's J.J. Redick missed an open triple to let the Hawks fly to an 84-81 win. Atlanta advances to the second round for the third year in a row.
So here's how the conference semi-finals set up in the NBA...the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics will engage in a duel between the new-big three and old-big three. The Atlanta Hawks will test the top-seeded Chicago Bulls. Out west the LA Lakers get a tough series against the Dallas Mavericks, and the Oklahoma City Thunder are waiting for the winners of San Antonio Spurs and the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis leads that series 3-2.
