The top teams are defined by their ability to win the close games. The Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees found themselves battling in a tense, one-run contest at Yankee Stadium on Monday.

Indians starter Carlos Carrasco worked himself out of a bases loaded jam with nobody out in the bottom of the first inning. New York led off the inning with an infield hit, but Yankee captain Derek Jeter was left stranded at third.

Cleveland's Asdrubal Cabrera hit an RBI single to left field off Yankees starter A-J Burnett in the fourth inning. Michael Brantley led off the 4th with a triple and he came in to score. The Indians held on to beat the Yankees 1-0.

Detroit beats Tampa Bay 2-1

In other action, the Detroit Tigers took on the Tampa Bay Rays. Victor Martinez gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 5th inning. His hit plated Brennan Boesch from second base. Rays starter Alex Cobb went 5-and-two-third innings. He allowed a run on eight hits, walked two and struck out seven.

But the Rays tied it at 1-1 in the 8th. Justin Ruggiano lifted a sacrifice fly to right with the bases loaded, this one would be another close game late in the match.

The scoreboard was tied 1-1 after nine innings, so the teams went to extras. It was Tiger slugger Ramon Santiago's night to be the hero.

He hit a triple in the 10th inning. Martinez tried to score all the way from first base, he reached home plate just before the relay arrived, and Detroit wins a 2-1 walk-off victory over Tampa Bay.
