Former World Player of the Year Ronaldinho trained for the first time with Flamengo on Thursday afternoon, as he prepares to make his debut in the upcoming championship of Rio de Janeiro state.

The 30-year-old and Flamengo midfielder Thiago Neves, who was also signed by the club earlier this week, were welcomed by roughly 500 fans at the airport of the southern city of Londrina, in Parana state. Ronaldinho's return to his home country is a bid to revive his flagging career and win a place in Brazil's 2014 World Cup squad after he was overlooked last year by former coach Dunga.

Under light rain, Ronaldinho greeted his colleagues and Flamengo Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo before jogging around the field. The signing of Ronaldinho has caused a wave of expectation at Flamengo.

The club has won five Brazilian championship titles, most recently in 2009, but finished only two points above the relegation zone last season.
