MLB: Mets seal 3-2 win over Yankees

The New York Mets looked for a breakthrough in their interleague series against the cross-town Yankees. But they'd wait through a rain delay before getting a chance to claim a hard fought win versus the Bronx Bombers on Sunday.

The Mets had a man on second and Daniel Murphy at the plate, he hit the ball past Alex Rodriguez at third. Brett Gardner tried to make a play to stop Carlos Beltran at the plate. Gardner's throw was not-in-time. Beltran opens the scoring for the home team.

Their American League-leading rivals struck back in the fifth. Robinson Cano was on second, and Nick Swisher hit the ball up the middle. Cano came around to score. The Yanks and Mets were tied at one and they'd stay even all the way through the seventh.

Now, the Yankees threatening in the eighth with nobody out. Curtis Granderson hit a pitch from Jason Isringhausen to right. Beltran easily made the catch but Gardner tagged up from third to score the go-ahead run.

But the Mets would tie the score and send the game to extra innings, then load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the tenth. Hector Noesi faced the Mets' Jason Bay, and Bay delivers the game-winning hit. Scott Hairston scores and triggers the celebration at home plate. The Mets win 3-2.

Cubs beat White Sox 3-1

The White Sox were looking for a fifth straight win and a sweep over the Cubs.

The Cubs' Darwin Barney was on first, and Starlin Castro made contact at the plate. Castro's shot dropped into left-center field. Barney came all the way around to score, and Castro raced around to slide safely at third. The Cubs go in front.

The North Siders followed up with a home run blast. Aramis Ramirez reached out and hit the ball to center. It carried over the wall for a two-run shot, the 12th homer of the year for Ramirez. The Cubs took a 3-0 lead.

But Cub! s' pitch er Kerry Wood wasn't as successful in relief. He threw a wild pitch in the eighth inning. The ball bounced to the backstop and brought Mark Teahen home from third base. The White Sox had their first run of the game.

But the Cubs stopped the White Sox rally behind pitcher Carlos Marmol. A-J Pierzynski struck out to end the game and Marmol earned his 17th save of the season. The Cubs score a 3-1 win.
